What is Castor Bean Plant?

Castor bean seeds contain ricin, one of the deadliest plant toxins — severely toxic to both cats and dogs. Chewed seeds are a life-threatening emergency.

Also known as: ricinus communis, ricin, castor oil plant, mole bean plant, castor bean seeds.

Symptoms to Watch For

🐕 In Dogs

  • Burning of the mouth, vomiting, and bloody diarrhea within hours
  • Severe abdominal pain and dehydration
  • Weakness, tremors, and collapse
  • Seizures, kidney failure, and death in serious cases (ricin poisoning)

🐈 In Cats

  • Mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain and dehydration
  • Weakness, lethargy, and collapse
  • Seizures, kidney failure, and death in serious cases

What to Do If Ingested

  1. Call a veterinarian or poison hotline immediately — do not wait for symptoms.
  2. Note how many seeds or how much plant material was eaten; whole chewed seeds are the most dangerous.
  3. Remove any remaining material from the mouth.
  4. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian instructs you to.

Steps apply to both cats and dogs. When in doubt, call a vet or poison hotline before acting. Have a cat? Run the Pet Poison Triage Wizard for cat-specific steps.

When to Call the Vet Immediately

Call your veterinarian or a poison control hotline right away if you notice any of these:

  • Any part of a castor bean plant was eaten, especially seeds
  • Vomiting, bloody diarrhea, or abdominal pain
  • Weakness, tremors, collapse, or seizures

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How dangerous are castor beans really?

Very. The seeds contain ricin, one of the most potent plant toxins known — it blocks cells from making proteins, causing severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea, organ failure, and potentially death. The bean coat must be broken (chewed) to release ricin, but you cannot rely on a pet not to chew. A single chewed seed can be fatal to a small pet.

Is castor oil dangerous too?

No — commercial castor oil is heat-treated, which destroys the ricin, so castor oil itself is not a ricin risk (it may just cause loose stools). The danger is the whole beans and the ornamental castor bean plant, which is grown in gardens and common in warm climates. Remove seed pods if you grow one around pets.

My dog swallowed a whole seed without chewing it. Is that safer?

An intact, unchewed seed may pass through with less ricin absorbed, but you cannot count on that — treat it as an emergency anyway. X-rays can confirm where the seed is, and a vet may induce vomiting or retrieve it endoscopically. Call a vet or poison hotline immediately either way.
